Transit workers Comment on Mayor’s Proposed DC Streetcar Budget
For nearly a decade, DC Streetcar workers have helped move thousands of people up and down H Street with dedication and professionalism. It was the potential expansion of the Streetcar network and reliable transit service for an overlooked community that inspired our members. Local 689 is disappointed that the Mayor’s proposed budget would phase out Streetcar in 2 years. We are committed to ensuring that we will not have a repeat of the debacle associated with the wind-down of the Circulator, if this phaseout comes to pass.
The Union notes that transit expansion and improvements are necessary for the success of a potentially redeveloped RFK site. We firmly believe that the DC Council should only provide RFK redevelopment funding if there will be a dedicated BRT line along H Street to replace Streetcar and a guaranteed transition plan for Streetcar workers to WMATA.
