Union demands Fairfax County Supervisor Jeff McKay support workers during their contract talks

Yesterday, ATU Local 689, the Union representing Fairfax Connector workers, held a rally and picketed outside the Fairfax County offices demanding Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chair Jeff McKay stand with workers during the Union's protracted contract talks with Transdev, a French owned company contracted to operate the county's transit system. Local 689 has been in negotiations with Transdev for a new contract since October 2023. Fairfax Connector workers have been working under an expired contract that expired November 30, 2023.

Contract talks have dragged on because the company has slow-walked the negotiation and for the most part it has refused to engage in serious and meaningful negotiations on key economic issues. Meanwhile, to this date, Chair McKay has been silent and refused to weigh in on the negotiations and express support for Local 689 and workers.

“It is beyond frustrating and disappointing that Chair McKay has not expressed any public support for our members during the contract negotiations, nor has he taken any to help the two sides reach a deal on a new contract," said Local 689 President Raymond Jackson. “Fairfax Connector workers are dedicated professionals focused on exceptional public service. They deserve a fair contract. It is time for Fairfax County to stand with workers.”

Local 689 has tried repeatedly to meet with Chair McKay to discuss the contract talks, but have yet to have such a meeting. The Union’s leadership met with Chair McKay’s staff once but have not received any response since when it has tried to schedule a follow-up meeting.
