Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113 in Toronto, Canada reaches tentative contract agreement in 11th hour as strike deadline neared. Issues included pay for injured workers, pay comparable to other transit and city workers and preservation of benefits. The first videos tell about the contract fight. There is a great report on the vast benefits of public transit called "What if the TTC Disappeared." Discharge of a Union Shop Steward (Click on link to see detailed description of videos or click on screen below to start watching) . This is a fictional dramatization of a discharge case involving a union shop steward. While the footage is dated, the points made by both sides in the case apply today. It is worth watching to familiarize yourself with grievance arbitration, how it works and what factors an arbitrator must consider when making a decision.


The Waldenville Arbitration (Click on link to see detailed description of videos or click on screen below to start watching) . Part of the Waldenville series produced by the U.S. Dept. of Labor around 1980. In this film, an employee is disciplined for tardiness. He files a grievance and the case goes to arbitration. The video presents the arbitration. It is a public employee case and the political pressure applied to the management is as real today as it was then. The procedures and issues presented in the arbitration are the same as those today.
