FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

QUESTIONS POSED AT THE SPECIAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

(Saturday December 11, 2010)

Q:   Do you think that Metro could back off of their position and honor the award before the judge rules?

A:   No.  By its own estimates, WMATA has already spent more than 1.3 million in legal fees in an attempt to overturn the arbitration decision.  WMATA has clearly decided that it wants to fight the arbitration award.

Q:   Is there a time limit for the judge to issue a ruling?

A:   No.  The judge may take as long as he deems necessary to reach a decision and issue a ruling.

Q:   When we agreed to refinance the pension losses of 2008, why did we not insist that WMATA withdraw its pension proposals?

A:   The purpose in refinancing the pension losses of 2008 was part of the total negotiated package.  It allowed the arbitrator to understand that 689 was negotiating in good faith.

Q:   What can I do as an individual to help?

A:  Stay informed and attend union meetings.  Read the E-News and Newsletter.  Pass it on to co-workers, family members, and friends.  Go to the arbitration and budget hearings and testify, if possible, about the need for services and the problems cutting services will cause the public and members.  Stay positive.

Q:   Can there be more frequent visits to our work places by shop stewards for updates on the contract situation and more union news?

A:  Shop Stewards are available every day and night to help members and answer questions about the contract or any other work related matter.  They have been given updates and we have published regular updates in each newsletter this past year, put updates in the E-news, and on the website.  The officers have been visiting work sites this year to discuss the contract and any other issues members have.  You can call the union hall and talk with an officer or an assistant business agent if you need more information.  Attending union meetings is important since all issues are raised and discussed with the membership.
