Statement from ATU Local 689 on "SafeTrack" Repairs to Metrorail

5/6/2016

Today we learned that the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will conduct extensive track work on a project called “SafeTrack” over a months-long timetable throughout the system’s rail lines.  The rehabilitation project will include extended periods of single tracking and some station closings, beginning next month.

These repairs will likely be a great inconvenience to our customers. As Metro’s largest union and representative of the rail and bus operators, station managers and the maintenance and clerical workers of this system, we stand ready to get the appropriate work done within the outlined timetable to minimize that inconvenience.  We also share General Manager Paul Wiedefeld’s desire to build up the confidence of the customers we serve, and we hope that these repairs will lead to that by making our system up to date and safe.
At Local 689, we know that safety is of critical importance, both to us and the riding public. We support this effort because we believe that it will lead to a stronger safety culture for our system and its riders.

At the end of the day, Local 689 members, leadership, and the riding public of this region all want a safe, affordable and reliable transit system. Local 689 is committed to working with WMATA leadership to create that safety culture. We hope that this plan will move us forward in making Metro the best and safest rail system it can be for the people we serve.

If safety is so important, why do ATU members keep lying about maintenance being done, drive buses recklessly, and in general not bother about riders' issues when they are raised ?

Maintenance issues are consistently covered up by GM and their cronies so they can look productive and efficient . Local 689 brothers (and sisters) are out there risking their very lives working hard doing their jobs under the direction of some arm-chair idiot who's feet have never touched a track bed. As far as the buses go bus operators safely pilot their vehicles through some of the worst traffic in this nation. The could all drive their vehicles like baby carriages and still get negative press. Ask yourself this question, "Who comes to get you in late wet-ass hour of the morning when no one else will take you home?" After all we are Metro...some one you just love to hate... peace !

HAHAHAHA you're hilarious
safety and Metro cannot share the same sentence. Is maintenance done or not done ? apparently it is NOT done

And cry me a river for the poor employees waking up early to get me to work, they are handsomely paid for that.

I'm pro-union but yours makes all other unions look bad. You should be ashamed

What is your take on what is being played out in the media? The perception is that ultimatums are being placed on employees using scare tactics; but how about the managers who allowed these years of neglect to back up? What are their rewards?
Does this mean they are shaving off some of the 'fluff' of over 600 managers?
I hear internal employees with degrees and company tuition reimbursement recipients have not applied for positions since HR is hiring people off the street with no experience and failing to advertise these positions internally. Maybe that is part of the problem.

Mike the person you discribed is Peter! He sounds like a Fox 5 employee! Peter you need to walk a mile in an Metro employees shoes, then you may have an idea what we go through. Like when the Bus Driver on Nannie Helen Bouroghs Ave that got stabbed & high jacked. Or the Janice McMillan who lost her life serving the public in 2009. Peter your just looking at your own inconvenience & placing blame. All in the Kool-Aid & don't know the flavor!!

Oh & by the way Peter yes Maintenance is done. Metro has been around for 40 yrs! Do you really believe that a transit company could be in business for that long & don't do a resonable amount of maintenance, really? Try driving your car for 10 yrs without doing any repairs & see how that works for ya!!
