Every four years, Local 689 members have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in the future of the union by giving input into the drafting of our new Contractual Business Agreement (“Contract”). The Contract Campaign Committee is in the process of beginning to get input from Local 689 members and we hope that if you have an idea for this upcoming contract that you will be involved.
We are excited that, for the first time, members are able to submit contract proposals on our website in addition to submitting them the traditional way at the Union Hall. By clicking the link here you can go to the contract proposal page and submit your ideas straight from your computer. You can also download the form online, or come to the Union Hall and submit it to Katie Traber who can be reached by calling (301) 568-6899 ext 8221.
Our contract with WMATA covers many different classifications, and there are several different variables that our union has to take into account when negotiating. This is why we have representatives from every division on the committee and will be going out to all the garages and work facilities to talk with 689 members about their ideas for the Contract.
The Contract between WMATA and Local 689 covers street and electric railway employees which include --- but is not limited to --- operations (bus and rail), maintenance and construction, administrative and clerical, division clerks and related personnel in minor official positions who work with other workers but do not have responsibility to hire and fire employees.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the Contract is a document that sets guidelines on how WMATA and Local 689 operate in relation to each other. Your input on how that relationship should move forward is necessary to make our positions better for ourselves, the Authority and, ultimately, our riders.
We are anxious to know what rank and file members want in the contract and I hope that all members will be engaged in this process. Participation is key to make this contract great, and we hope that every 689 member will play a part.
